The Grand Tour

Dramatis Personae: Alice Ross, 1890-1980

Hawaii, Pago-Pago, New Zealand, Australia, Philippines, Japan, China, Burma, Siam, India, Turkey, the Levant, Eqypt and finally home on the Orient Express.   Traveling with her father, Admiral Albert Ross, our 22 year old heroine writes home to her aunt, producing about 70 letters during this two year journey.

Angel, Lover Sarah “Sadie” Markillie Ross, 1852 – 1923.   “The Aunt who reared me.”   Alice’s mother died when she was young, so she often resided with Aunt Sadie in Clarion, Pennsylvania.

Shang Another Alice Ross, 1887 – 1962.  Like an older sister, but actually a cousin of the correspondent. Someone said her red hair looked like a Shanghai rooster, and the nickname stuck.

Her Fiance Enoch Barton Garey, 1883 – 1957.  He goes by Barton or E.B.

Mary Mary Ross, 1883 – 1970. Cousin of the writer, daughter of Aunt Sadie, and sister of Shang.   A newly-wed, her husband is Arthur Stewart.

Mrs. Chandler – A young widow, graduate of Smith College, teaching in China, same age as Mary.

Who is posting these letters? My name is Linda Garey, but to say more would give away the ending. Contact me at Linda.Garey@gmail.com

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these letters. You have done a marvelous job of transcribing. Alice wrote in a fashion that transports the reader to these far away places. It is a lot of fun to read about her travels and her family.
